RFQ: I have some very old, tubular chrome furniture that is not in skilful condition (pitted chrome but information technology does seem to clear reasonably well when I used the 0000 steel wool and chrome polish. However, the chore is exhausting. Tin can yous, or do y'all know anyone who would polish these pieces for me? I have four chairs and one 3-cushion sofa. They are 1930s Kem Weber pieces that are about and beloved to me. Any ideas? Much thanks. Joel

A. Endeavour to detach your objects and and then immerse metallic parts in solution of 47,5 gms sodium gluconate, 47,5 gms citric acid , 4,9 gms tartaric acrid , 0,1 gm nonionic detergent / i-x lit water (according to USPT4,264,418). Solution can be used hot or cold. Afterwards at to the lowest degree 10 minutes you lot can rinse parts with plenty of water, and so you tin dry them with paper towels and pilus dryer. Smooth and protect with Everbrite [a finishing.com supporting advertiser] or whatsoever other adept metal clearcoat. Hope it helps and practiced luck!

Q. Hello,
I run a cafe on the embankment in Sydney Australia and have many chrome chairs and tables which are showing signs of corrosion. I have cleaned them with detergent, which helps a picayune but doesn't slow it down.
Is in that location some way I can make clean them and besides a coating to put on to wearisome downward or terminate standing bug?

A. Hi Jason. We in the plating industry detest to see letters like yours where the plating isn't proving satisfactory.
If y'all look at O.E.Yard. chrome truck bumpers, you know that high quality chrome plating can easily withstand decades of service under conditions far more challenging than your tables and chairs face.
But the unfortunate fact is that while all chrome plating may look about the same, it is actually of highly varying quality to satisfy the anticipated service condition. We would have to go technical, and talk about micro-bang-up, and duplex nickel and layer thicknesses to explicate fully, simply it appears that the plating on your chairs and tables was designed for indoor utilize, non the salty beach service condition they find themselves in.
Chrome polish and frequent waxing may be near the best you can do. Chrome plating is highly 'non-wetting' so information technology is difficult to reliably lacquer chrome, simply perhaps one of the specialists here nearly tin advise a lacquer that will piece of work.

A. Chrome plating will tend to rust when exposed to the outdoor environment. This is due to the fact that the chairs may not take been plated with a procedure optimized for the surround y'all have put them in (e.grand. use of duplex nickel, microporous chrome, etc.). You lot are correctly removing the corrosive materials by cleaning the chairs and can slow down or eliminate the corrosion by articulate lacquer coating the chairs over the chrome with an aerosol fabric. A 2nd approach would be repeated applications of erstwhile fashioned paste wax. When purchasing new chairs, you would want to find ones with a plated and powder coated finish or ones which are just powder coated.
Hope this helps Gene

How to clean chrome on 1950s table

Q. Hello,

Tin someone delight tell me the best mode to clean information technology, and where to accept something rechromed, if this is possible. I accept a 1950s formica table in need of an overhaul. It has some rust on it and some chrome peeling off. What can I practise, if anything?

A. Beyond cleaning it with metallic polish and keeping it waxed, in that location isn't much you can do yourself. The items can certainly be re-chromed by a plating shop. Printing the 'Jobshops' push below to find some shops.
Simply be aware that there is a tremendous corporeality of transmission labor involved in stripping the parts, buffing them, and replating them. You volition surely tell yourself that you could buy new legs for less if you could find them and you'd exist right. When an O.E.M. plates new legs, ane operator tin chrome plate hundreds per hour with automated equipment; when quondam parts are refurbished it can have hours just for your parts.

Is rechroming of corroded vintage chrome chairs possible?
2003
Q. Tin chairs that have corroded be re-chromed successfully?
Michael Bell

A. They absolutely can be, Michael -- but probably not price effectively unless they are special to you. There is no real technical difficulty in stripping the old plating, and so polishing, buffing, and replating. Only rework is ane at a time hand work that may cost more than new chairs.
Figure an hr or hour and a half work on each chair, and that a plater needs to charge the same as a plumber or auto mechanic. If you think that cost represents highway robbery, purchase new chairs instead. If you remember it's reasonable considering the value of the chairs to you, it'southward no problem. Proficient luck!

A. We restore fifty'southward chrome and Formica dinette sets. We get these sets with chrome that is very corroded. The well-produced chrome chairs have the capability to look close to the original status. Removing the rust is the hardest function and involves a lot of time and piece of work.
The process that has been successful for u.s.a. is to employ a good chrome smooth and a very fine form of 0000 steel wool [affil. link to info/product at Rockler]. Once the chrome is looking good again a glaze of wax is applied.
The procedure takes about 1/2 hour per chair but lasts nigh 6 months before they have to take a touched up once more. The practiced news is that the bear on up process only takes nigh x minutes.

Q. We have but purchased a 50's table set. We would appreciate some information on how to clean the chrome. There is a lot of pitting and black color on the chrome. We tried a chrome polish for basically cars, but information technology didn't work with the pitting and all the black discoloration. If it can't exist cleaned, what do yous recommend we do. Tin it be painted with a chrome paint? We would really like to keep information technology original. A. Hello, Pamela. Items like this consist of steel tubing which was plated with copper, and then nickel, then chrome. The plating is now perforated in spots and you lot may be looking at blackened copper or rusted steel; at that place is no good mode to clean blank steel to plough it dorsum to chrome. The all-time you can exercise without replating it is to clean it with metal polish and very fine steel wool, and so keep it well waxed to deter rusting.
A plating store volition probably encounter no item technical difficulty in stripping this tubing, repolishing it, and replating it -- many plating shops would be happy to exercise it for you. Just pick a plating shop from our Jobshops Directory here, or your yellow pages, and find one that offers nickel-chrome plating to the public.
The issue is that information technology is quite labor intensive and will probably cost significantly more than yous would like to pay. When the dinette set was manufactured, hundreds of identical tubes were polished and plated simultaneously on automated machinery, so the labor price was divided over hundreds of parts. When y'all demand one set up done, and it takes a craftsman the improve function of a day, y'all tin't expect him to work for less than what a plumber or mechanic would charge for their fourth dimension. In other words information technology's probably going to toll a few hundred dollars, and most people aren't interested unless the particular has 18-carat sentimental value or replacements are unavailable.
Our Introduction to Chrome Plating will assist y'all appreciate what information technology's about (and why information technology'southward costly).
You can purchase chrome paint from inexpensive [Bumper Chrome Pigment [affil. link to info/product on Amazon]] to quite expensive. The more you spend the closer information technology volition look to existent chrome plating. Simply anything in a spray can is not likely to look much similar real chrome plating. Proficient luck.

Pigment on chrome chairs looks bad
June 7, 2022
Q. I have a like question. I painted the chrome on my chairs and information technology looks terrible. I have had a few people recommend sandblasting the pigment off. Before I pursue this, I would like to know what my metal volition look like once it is sandblasted. What would be my adjacent step if I do this? I too spoke with a replating visitor and the guy wouldn't fifty-fifty requite me a price. He kept maxim that I should buy new chairs because having them replated would exist too expensive. Any communication?
Carol Siler

^
June 8, 2022
A. Sandblasting volition leave a fairly rough surface and volition remove or destroy whatever plating is under the paint.
A professional person painter could likely do an OK job over a sandblasted surface, but if you don't desire them painted...
The plater probable told you the truth, that it will exist less expensive to purchase new.

A. Hi, Carol.
It is certainly non impossible to chrome plate those chair legs. The point that Jeffrey and the plater are making is that information technology is labor intensive, so it volition be more expensive than most people might look. Telephone call some more plating shops until y'all detect a couple who can and want to do it. But don't think it's a conspiracy if y'all can't get information technology washed cheap; it may accept an hour or two per chair, and (as mentioned) platers have to charge at least as much for their fourth dimension equally mechanics or plumbers :-)
Best of luck.

A. I accept a dinette set I bought xx years ago. I have had it in storage, and through no fault of my own accept had other people store it for me, of course not caring well-nigh the value, sentimental or otherwise. I've cleaned it 3 times over the years with S.O.S. pads. I have just recovered it later on half-dozen years of bad storage and most 20% of it is to the metal base and needs to exist replated, but the other 90% that was pitted and had rust cleaned upwards just fine and is still as shiny as it was when I bought it!

A. Hello,
My husband and I have been selling fabulous and unique 1950'due south era chrome dinette sets for many years now. Nosotros restore tables and chairs every bit needed and have always had exceptional results using the process of applying chrome smoothen to buff out areas subsequently removing any rust or corrosion, albeit we tend to avert whatever chrome in this condition. However, where needed we notice that information technology just takes a lot of elbow grease to obtain optimal results restoring these wonderful tables, chairs and dinette sets to their original state.

A. Roxanne: chrome polish and elbow grease is an affordable and practical approach to removing the rust in many cases. But once there has been rust, it means the plating is perforated--and polishing it may make it look passable but doesn't repair information technology: information technology remains a loftier maintenance outcome where only regular polishing and frequent rewaxing will limit the rusting. Although replating is rather expensive , that's the way to truly restore the set to original condition. Since y'all are in the business and may have book, so the procedure volition exist more than affordable, you might want to marshal yourself with a local plating store so you can over this pick.

RFQ. I have a kitchen tabular array and four chairs in need of re-chroming. The tabular array legs have some large rust spots. In other areas the spots are small only many. A. In improver to Goran'due south fine suggestion, chrome polish will remove the rust, and wax will deter its return for a brusk while. Just the purpose of the original chrome plating was both decorative and to keep the air from reaching the steel of the table legs. Once the plating is perforated, rust is inevitable. If the table is of value, real or sentimental, sending the legs to a plating shop for replating is the right answer. Information technology's just not inexpensive :-(

Where to notice broad chrome trim for a l'south tabular array?
2005
Q. For a couple of years now I have been collecting l's - 70's furnishings for my girl. I plant a 50'southward chrome & formica table in decent shape, wishing to proceed information technology in skillful shape I stored it in my workshop. My husband used it for a cutting tabular array. Needless to say it is no longer in proficient shape.
The chrome is slightly pulled away from one edge and the formica surface at present has a razor knife cut about 2 1/2" in length.
I can resurface it with arborite but will need to remove the trim which will cause irreparable damage.
I had idea of using automotive paint to resurface the table leaving the chrome trim intact but I don't think information technology will stand up to daily scuffs and scrapes.
Exercise you know where I can find replacement chrome trim or practise you have whatsoever suggestions that I can utilize to the table top?

I'm not quite understanding what you are painting since people normally don't pigment the lesser side of tables, and I'm non sure if you are talking about the underside of the formica, or the bottom of chrome rails belongings it together, but I don't see harm in information technology. May 2022
A. Hi cousin Judy. I detest to exist a broken tape but the truth is that chrome plating tin be an outstanding corrosion resistant finish as can exist seen on the chrome plated grills of virtually all current cars, and the chrome plated bumpers on trucks, which can withstand the worst that the conditions and the roads can throw at them for decades.
But chrome plating can also exist shiny when information technology's so poor that it already has barely visible rust as information technology waits for sale in the big box stores which are selling it for bathrooms (our Intro to Chrome Plating FAQ explains it all and includes close upwards photos showing the rust on bathroom fixtures for auction).
Unfortunately, the chrome on your dinette gear up is probably closer to the bathroom fixture chrome plating than the truck bumper plating. Regular application of paste wax to endeavor to proceed water and vapor off the chrome plating is probably your all-time bet.
